This statement has been prepared to answer the questionnaire which
acoompanied the letter dated November 10, 1953 from the Honorable John
p. Saylor, M.C., to the Secretary of the Interior.

For oonvenience, each question from the questionnaire is stated in
the ensuing text, follo"~d by the ans~er. Large statistical tables are
l'ound in the back in numerical sequence rather than being interleaved
in the text. EII"ery attempt has been made to answer each question as
completely as possible in the time available. \Vhere doubt existed as
to the scope or meaning of a question, at least one interpretation or
assumption is stated and ~swered.

The questionnaire refers to estimates and data set forth in the
project planning report. Cost estimates and financial and economic
analyses in the report of January 1950 were revised by Secretary
McKay's Report to the President dated April 30, 1953. Current cost
estimates and other requested analys~s are compared vdth corrwsponding
data in the Secretary I s report rather than with data in the original
report. . Both reports -arc con-cained in House Document No. 187, 83d
Congress, 1st Session, That document ,dll be cited subsGquently only
as H. D. 187.

Answ~r - The estimated total project construction co~t based
on October bS3 prices is iil77 ,432,000 as cor.rparod to $172,898,000 fOl'
January 1953 prices. The increase of' ~4,534,OOO is 2.6 percent of the
January 1953 costs. Annual operation, maintenance and relJlacc:nent C0sts

price level, consequently, the .effect of the change in price index
