SUMMARY SHEETS

DOLORES PROJECT, COLORADO

LOCATION

Montezuma and Dolores Counties of southwestern Colorado in the Upper
Colorado River Basin.

PLAN
-

The Dolores Project will develop water from the Dolores River for irri-
gation, municipal and industrial use, power production, recreation, and
fish and wildlife enhancement. It will also provide flood and salinity
control and cultural resources mitigation and will aid in area economic
redevelopment. Irrigation water will be provided to the Dove Creek and
Montezuma Valley areas in the Dolores Water Conservancy District and the
Towaoc area on the Ute Mountain Ute Indian Reservation.

Primary storage for all project purposes will be provided by McPhee
Reservoir on the Dolores River. Dawson Draw Reservoir will be con-
structed specifically for fish and wildlife enhancement and will be sup-
plied primarily from irrigation return flows.

Irrigation water will be prOVided for full service land in the Dove Creek
and Towaoc areas and for supplemental service land in the Montezuma
Valley area. Water for the Dove Creek area will be pumped from McPhee
Reservoir by the Great Cut Pumping Plant and conveyed through the Dove
Creek Canal and the South Canal. Water for the Towaoc area will be con-
veyed from the reservoir through the Dolores Tunnel to the Dolores and
Towaoc Canals. Buried pipe lateral systems will distribute water to
farms in both the Dove Creek and Towaoc areas. The Montezuma Valley
area is presently served by an existing gravity distribution system,
owned by the Montezuma Valley Irrigation Company (MVIC). The MVIC system
will be greatly improved by the construction of several Dolores Project
features. The Dolores Tunnel and Canal have already been constructed,
replacing the old MVIC tunnel and East Lateral. The proposed Towaoc
Canal will replace the existing MVIC Lower Hermana Lateral and Highline
Ditch. The Rocky Ford Laterals will deliver water to lands presently
served by the Rocky Ford Ditch, which will be abandoned. Portions of
the existing MVIC Lone Pine and Upper Hermana Laterals will be improved
with the addition of earth lining. The construction of the Towaoc
Canal, Rocky Ford Laterals, and earth lining of the two MVIC laterals
will provide substantial salinity control in the project area.

Municipal and industrial water supplies for the communities of Cortez
and Towaoc will be stored in McPhee Reservoir and delivered through the
recently constructed Dolores Tunnel and Canal and the proposed Cortez-
Towaoc Pipeline. The Cortez-Towaoc Pipeline, formerly a project feature,

S-l
