ft

000384

.

.

b) lack of information about the rivers for those using them,

particularly inexperienced and out-of-state users who

aren't familiar with Colorado rivers;

c) limited auto-river access points at beginning and end of

runs causing traffic, trash and parking problems;

d) use-landowner conflicts over access to the river and

trespassing violations along the river; and

e) public safety (from drowning or injury, but also sanita-

tion and drinking water).

With the above concerns in mind this effort to estimate river usage

in Colorado was undertaken. This report contains results of a boater-use

inventory designed to find out where and when the river use occurred in

1976, and by what type of user. It is not a guide to rivers in the state

and should not be used that way. It is not intended to tell boaters where

they should go and what type of water to expect. That could be a future

project with a larger scope and longer time period.

For the protection of the rivers in the state, private landowner

rights, and the protection of the rights of the individuals using the

rivers for recreation, a solid basis of information or river-use estimates

is needed. This report shows what our present recreational river resources

are and the extent to which they are being used today, and provides the

background of data necessary for enabling equitable management of these

rivers.

The purpose of this report is to serve as information for the Division

of Parks and Outdoor Recreation, the Division's Board-members, the State's

.

-3-
