Metropolitan Water Supply Investigations - Phase II Plan of Study
8/16/94 5:04 PM

Page 17

d) Sub-Task Leader: Lee Rozak/is

9. . Sub-Task 4i: Analysis of Surface Storage Opportunities

a) Purpose

Inventory the availability of storage in existing reservoirs and compile
information regarding downstream storage potential within the study area. (If
we are to look at the potential for interruptible supply agreements on the west
slope, then the study area should probably include west slope storage
reservoirs.)

b) Approach

The following existing. reservoirs will be included in the storage analysis:
Antero, Spinney Mountain, Elevenmile, Cheesman, Chatfield, Bear Creek,
Cherry Creek, Dillon, Aurora, Gross, and Barr Lake,

Obtain information from the applicable management agencies for each
reservoir including the following:

. A description of the physiCal features of the reservoir
. Associated water rights
. Current and future anticipated operational practices and constraints
. A vailability of storage including space the may be available on a
temporary or permanent basis or on a seasonal basis

Gather information regarding other potential storage sites that have been
studied by metro area water agencies. This would include the survey of
downstream storage opportunities conducted by Denver Water, work done by
Thornton on gravel pit storage, and others.

Evaluate the nature and extent of available storage at various existing and
proposed facilities in the context of each of the water supply options being
considered in the MWSI study. The objective of this evaluation would be to
determine which storage options may be suitable for use in conjunction with
effluent management, conjunctive use, and/or interruptible supply,
Identify legal and institutional arrangements necessary of utilization of
facilities where storage is available.

Identify environmental and recreational issues and constraints associated with
utilization of facilities where storage is available.
