Metropolitan Water Supply Investigations - Phase II Plan of Study
8/16/94 5:04 PM

Page 9

Key Technical Support: Technical staif from Hydrosphere and subcontractors as
needed.

1. Sub-Task 4a: Resource Assessment of Denver Basin Aquifers

a) Purpose:

Review background information and identify issues related to potential use of
Denver Basin aquifers for conjunctive use groundwater projects north of the
Palmer divide.

Identify Denver Basin aquifer characteristics including volume of groundwater
per acre and production capacity in each aquifer.

Provide generallocational and economic criteria for development and use of
wen fields for conjunctive use purposes.

b) Approach

Perform an inventory of Denver Basin Aquifer groundwater resources: aquifer
characteristics. tributary classifications. quantity estimates, water qual ity
conditions, location of best aquifer materials, current levels of use, water-level
declines, aquifer dynamics, recharge potential, hydrogeologic effects of
aquifer recharge. (Should we list likely information sources to be examined?)

Investigate the legal framework of conjunctive use and artificial recharge of
Denver Basin aquifers under Colorado Water Law and Federal Law.

Identify general envirornnental and permitting issues related to well
development and well field construction.

From the information compiled and reviewed and from analyses performed,
identify preferred well field locations, and potential yields of these well fields
and geographically portray this information including general location, water
sources, production in acre feet per year, costs on an acre foot basis, and.
envirornnental issues.

c) Output
A memorandum report presenting compiled findings with accompanying
graphs, maps and tables as needed.
