History of Events ~ <br /> <br />1956: <br /> <br />Congress, through the Colorado River Storage Act of April 11, 1956 <br />(70 Stat. 105), authorizes afeasibi1iJy study of the project. <br /> <br />1962: <br /> <br />Reclamation finds the project to be "engineeringly sound and <br />financially sound and feasible. " <br /> <br />1968: <br /> <br />Congress, through the Colorado River Basin Project Act of <br />September 26, 1968 (82 Stat. 885), authorizes the construction of the <br />project, consisting of Howardsville Reservoir near Silver1on, Hay <br />Gulch Reservoir 25 miles west of Durango, Meadows Reservoir, 48 <br />miles of canals and tunnels and a diversion of the Animas River oJ <br />Taft, halfway between Durango and Silverlon. <br /> <br />1973: <br /> <br />Congress appropriates funds for advance studies. <br /> <br />1974-77: <br /> <br />An advisory team of state, federal, and local officials considers about <br />30 altemoJe plans for the project. <br /> <br />September 1979: <br /> <br />The Definite Plan Reporl, detailing the new configuration of Ridges <br />Basin and Southern Ute Reservoirs, is completed by Deparlment of <br />the Interior. <br /> <br />December 1979: <br /> <br />Endangered Species Act, non-jeopardy opinion on Animas-La Plata <br />Project is issued by U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. <br /> <br />July 1980: <br /> <br />The Final Environmental Statement is completed. <br /> <br />July 1986: <br /> <br />The Deparlment of the Interior accepts a cost-sharing arrangement <br />thoJ calls for state and local entities to provide 38 per cent of the up- <br />front funding. <br /> <br />December 1986: <br /> <br />The Colorado Ute Indian WoJer Rights Final Settlement Agreement <br />is signed. The Ute Mountain Ute and Southern Ute Indian Tribes <br />agree to drop claims on San Juan Basin streams in exchange for <br />woJer in the Animas-La Plata Project and about $60 miUion in <br />economic development funds. <br /> <br />December 1987: <br /> <br />Voters within the Animas-La Plata WoJer Conservancy District <br />approve their repayment contract. <br /> <br />November 1988: <br /> <br />Colorado Ute Indian WoJer Rights Settlement Act becomes law, P.L. <br />100-585. <br /> <br />December 1989: <br /> <br />Ute Mountain Ute and Southern Ute Indian Tribes pass resolutions <br />approving their respective draft repayment contracts as-to-form. <br /> <br />6 <br />
