APPENDIX A

Municipal and industrial water for Shiprock, Farmington, Aztec,
B loomfie ld and sur~rout1C:ling_area sin New Mexico would be supplied
by direct flow from the Animas River. When these flows become in-
adequate, supplemental releases from Ridges Basin Reservoir would
be made to the Animas River to satisfy the needs of the New Mexico
communities. Since Bloomfield is located in the San Juan River
Val}~y above the mouth of the Animas River, it would receive Animas-
La Plata project water through an exchange arrangement.

The Ridges Basin Pumping~Plan~ with a maximum dynamic head of 330
feet and located on the west edge of the reservoir, would pump water
from the reservoir into Ridges Basin Canal. That canal would be 17.4
miles in length, including a 2.8 mile long tunnel between the Animas
and La Plata River drainages. It would deliver irrigation water to
the Red Mesa area in route and terminate at the La Plata River.

The Dry Side Canal would divert from the La Plata River at the ter-
minus of the Ridges Basin Canal and would deliver Animas River water
and surplus La plata River water for irrigation in the Dry Side area
and irrigation and municipal and industrial use~ in the Ute Mountain
Ute Indian reservation.

Southern Ute Reservoir, located astraddle the Colorado-New Mexico
line, would store La Plata River flows diverted into the reservoir
through the Long Hollow Diversion Dam and Canal. New Mexico irri-
gation requirements would be met from the La Plata River direct flows,
supplemented by storage releases from Southern Ute Reservoir.

Southern Ute Reservoir would also meet the municipal and industrial
water requirements of the Southern. Ute Indians. When La Plata River
water stored' at Southern Ute Reservoir is insufficient to meet the~e
needs, additional Animas River water would be routed through Ridges
/
Basin Reservoir to Southern Ute Reservoir.

Big Stick Reservoir located above Hesperus, Colorado would supply
irrigation water to the La Plata, Colorado area and furnish domestic

-9-

----~
1
I

l

,
!1
:1
f..
*:

'<

tf.-:

~:,

"f_

~ -\ ,

;'X'

f);
t:.:.
1""1':;
"
'-It
I ~.-
I
