f,J

Riverside - The major portion of the Riverside irrigation system
(see Figure 10) is located along lower Virgin River about 12 miles
upstream of Lake Mead. The group consists of four operators. Total
agricultural area is 1,225 acres, but only 395 acres are being irrigated
at present. Irrigation is normally conducted during all months of
the year.

Three operators use the Riverside diversion structure on Virgin
River as a source for their irrigation water. This structure is located
approximately one and one-fourth miles upstream of the Riverside bridge
on State Route 170, and diverts water south of the river channel.
One operator pumps water from the river and irrigates north of the
channel. The lift is about ten feet.

The main ditch length of 9,240 feet is unlined. Water is available
twice weekly during the summer months only when sediment is flushed
from the upstream Mesquite Diversion structure.

Attempts to construct a permanent diversion structure acrosa the
river channel have met with failure, apparently due to the continuously
saturated condition of the base soil material at the site, and the
swift velocity of the river during floods. The earthen structure now
being used must be repaired or rebuilt after each minor flood flow.

t

LEGEND
~ I~igated Land

USDA-SCS

o '000 ZOllO 3OOD!WI
,

..."

Figure 10
IRRIGATED LAND
RIVERSIDE AREA, NEVADA

'\ ",'" r "..... ~
lj'"l....ti

19

Virgin Valley Subevaluation Unit
Arizona.
