OfflQhq
UU.p!.,

Expenditures under the Atmospheric Water Resources Program for

fiscal years 1962 through 1966 are tabulated in Table 1. This initial

program is an operationally oriented engineering research effort,

aimed at learning the circumstances under which precipitation modi-

fication techrliques may increase inflow into water supply systems,

and at developing a practical capability to do so.

~.
~~~~~
i"t'-";'<",,;'iJ,
The program has been empirical, based on knowledge and experience
already available, Techrlical systems are now available for meas-
uring the physical characteristics of the atmosphere, delivering seed-
ing materials, and evaluating the results. Field experiments using
these systems are constantly providing additional knowledge of the
atmospheric data and experience for improving future systems and
techrliques.
Field experiments to date have been concentrated on types of cloud
formations known to occur regularly in certain areas over extended
periods of time. Field laboratories have been established in some
of the most promising of these areas. Research and practical exper-
iments conducted at these locations offer the best immediate oppor-
tunities for gaining added experience and knowledge in precipitation
modification techniques, The knowledge gained will be applicable in
the future to develop techniques for the treatment of other cloud types
in other areas. The Atmospheric Water Resources Program has
attracted imaginative and practical scientists and technicians who
believe that this approach will develop the capability to augment
i'$.'
~
~ /~
. - -, -':~.~-.'
