EXISTING DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR PROGRAM

The Department of the Interior's Atmospheric Water Resources
Program was initiated in 1962 with an appropriation of $100.000,
" . . , for research on increasing rainfall by cloud seeding. "*

Financial support for the Department's continuing research efforts has

increased by stages up to the present $2,98 million. ** The Bureau

of Reclamation. long a water resources development agency of the
Department of the Interior, has been responsible for directing the
Atmospheric Water Resources Program,

The entire Federal program for fisc'al year 1966 in all areas of

weather modification amounted to about $7 million. Of some $4 lnil-

million was directed to the Department of the Interior i $1,2 million

to the National Science Foundation, and $0. 035 million to the Depart-

ment of Commerce.

Other Federal activities in weather modification include programs
dealing with fog and cloud dissipation. hail and lightning suppression,
and the modification of severe storms such as hurricanes and cyclones.
