Work has continued on the routine operation and maintenance of 671
stream. flow and rel;lervoir meaS\l1'Elmentstations 'and the computation of the
correspo!i?-ing records. The total ,of 671 stations includes 30 stations for'
which computed ,'recorclsarefurnished bY other agencies for publication in
the WaterooSuPply Papers. It includes also 109 stations operated mairily for
licensees of the Federal Power, CommiSSion, resll1ts of which are not published.

, Qther, surface-w&ter investigations' and special projects continued during
the report period have includecl: (1) correlation studies in an evaluation
of the gaging-station network, (2) d,etermination of ,low-flow and peak- ,
discharge characteristios at S6lec.ted stream sites not equipped as complete-'
record gaging stations, 0) the Comp:1lation Report ot runoff records through
1950, (4) studies Of the J.ower Santa Yn$z River tor the Bureau of Reclamation,
Recommendations were made for a proposed expanded data collection pro-
gram for small drainage areas in CaUfornia. The general Qbjective ,of this
program is to ob~ain suf.t'1c1ent basic hydrologic data to define the
magnitude and frequency of floods on a regional baSis tor the entire state;'
and to obtain fiood hydrograph data on, a state-wide basis for any anticipated' '
fuU!"scale !1Ydrologic, study.

Pliinswere :initiated tor a survey of Salton Sea up to elevation minus
200 to 'define accurate capacity curves and tables. Field work and pre-
paration of a contour map with five-foot contoursisbeing done by the
Topographic Di,vision.
