The shaft is 1650 feet deep <br />and will be used primarily as aventj,latingshaft for the mine. The company <br />has been mining the trona Qepolilitand procl1lssing the ore into soda ash <br />since 1947. <br /> <br />":.-::'. <br /> <br />~~~; <br /> <br />, The utah ,Power & Light Company is constructing a 100,000 KW addition <br />to its 'steam power plant at Castlegate, Utah. The initial plsnt with a <br />,potential of ~6,000 KW was completed in 1955. The plant is adjacent to <br />the Castlegate mine of the Independent CO,al & Coke Company which mille will <br />furnish the bulk of the 1700 tons of coal required each day by the plapt <br />when copst.ruction of the addition is completed. At present, the 66,000 <br />KW plallt is consum,ing 800 tons of coal per day. <br /> <br />On August 10, 19551 regu;Lations coverillg the leasillg of metallic and <br />conmettalic minerals,otherthan coal, phosphate,potassilll!l, and sodium, <br />ill the Lake Mead Recreation Area, Nevada, were promulgated. Sillce that <br />time nUmerous lease applicatiolls have been filed coverillg such minerals ani <br />elements as baI.'ite, gypsll/ll, ,uranium, copper, 'manganese, tungsten,and <br />ti tariium. Many of these investigations <br />were conducted ,in cooperation with the Atomic Energy Commission in the <br />,search for, and appraisal of uranium' reserves. Several of the others were <br />in cooperation With the (Jalifornia Divis1011 of Mines. the Nevada Bureau of <br />Mines, and the Colorado Metal Min:\.ng Boa.rd, resp.ectivll1y; and one each in <br />cooperation with theAri~na'Bureal1 of JVlines, theU. A preliminary <br />geologic map, and evaluation of the saline deposits will result from this <br />study.
