L...

Bureau of Reclamation
Page 2

I.
,

'Flnally, I would I ike to comment on a major problem that Is not discussed
In the statement. This is the problem of siltation In a reservoir. It is
not genera II y understood by the pub lI.c that any reservoi r' has a def I n I te II fe
history before it fl.lls in with sediment that Is trapped by the dam. The
nearby example of the Paonla Reservoir is not comforting. No figures are
presented. in the draft statement estimating life span but sooner or. later.
this reservoir wi II become a vast. mud flat completely ruining.the valley and
producing major ecological impact of the entire Soap Creek drainage system.
Although this may take 50 or 100 or even 200 years, it matters not; do we
have the right to leave this unslgh'tly mess 'to future generations? What are
the Bureau's plans for this? This Is one of the most beautiful valleys In the
area and It seems more 'than criminal to change It in this way.

Sincerely,

I';,a,-. i.1J~

Or. Bruce L.
