The Vernal Unit, completed in
1962, provides supplemental irri.
gation water to about 15,000 ac-
res of land in Ashley Valley by
storing the high flows of Ashley
Creek for late season use. Flows
of Ashley Creek are diverted at
Fort Thornburgh Diversion Dam
through the 3-mile-long Steinaker
Feeder Canal for storage in Stein-
aker Reservoir. This off-stream
reservoir, 3.5 miles north of Ver.
nal, has a total capacity of 38,000
acre-feet. Storage water from the
reservoir is distributed through
the Steinaker Service Canal. Pro-
ject lands that previously received
a partial water supply from the
unregulated flows from Ashley
Creek, and frequently suffered
crop failures, are now assured a
reliable water supply. The Vernal
Unit also furnishes municipal wa-
ter for the communities of Ver-
nal, Naples, and Maeser. Recrea-
tion and fishing facilities have
been provided at Steinaker Res-
ervoir.

Upalco Unit

Advance planning of the Upalco
Unit is being completed with con-
struction scheduled to follow in
1978. The unit, located in Duch.
esne County, is planned to pro-
vide supplemental irrigation wa-
ter for about 43.000 acres of In.
dian and non-Indian lands along
Lake Fork River. 1t will also in-
clude some municipal and indus-
trial water. Also included in pro-
ject benefits are recreation, fish
and wildlife enhancements, and
flood control.

~ ^'>~
~~""'''_~_J ~-
~ <--r:. -
.....~.I~\i'~ ~
....--- A'J"" ~,.....
....'" It will store unappro-
priated flows of Lake Fork and
Yellowstone Rivers. Boneta Div-
ersion Dam on Yellowstone River
will divert water through the 8.5-

mile-long Taskeech Feeder Canal
to Taskeech Reservoir. Stored-
water from the reservoir will be
released into the 3.6-mile long
Taskeech Service Canal and del-
ivered into Lake Fork River for
distribution through existing can.
al systems.
