.

.

.

.

(.)661

57. Irrigation water s!::EP.:!:l. - The flow of the Purgatoire HiveI' in
the project area consists of the relatively low base flow, the early
sprinG runoff from sn01oJ-melt and flood flo,rs from intense swamer stonns.
A study of stream flow records shoHS the a.verage annual discharg€) at
Trinidad, for the period selected for study of the irrigation supply,
1925 to 1949, to be 65,100 acre-feet. Of this flow, an average of
54,000 acre-feet annually has been diverted for irrigation use in the
project area. In addition to this supply, an average of about 500 acre-
feet has been diverted annually 1:>y the liodel irrigation system, from
Cl1icosa Creek and other small arroyos.
58. Irrigation water requirements. - From an analysis of crop irri-
gation requirements by the Bureau of Reclamation, considering temperatures
and amounts of precipitation prevailing during the period 1925 ~o 1949
in the project area, it is estimated that the average conswnptive use of
,rater for irrigation would amount to 1.42 acre-feet annually. In addi-
tion, unavoidable water losses on the farm and reasonable canal and
lateral losses would increase the diversion requirement to a total of
about 2.90 acre-feet per acre. Using this w1it the total diverDi.on re-
quirement for the 19,500 acres in the project area would be about
56,500 acre-feet annually. For optimum crop production the monthly
distribution of the total diversion requirement' in acre-feet through the
growing season is estimated as follows: April 0.27, 11ay 0.52, June 0.55,
July 0.53, August 0.50, September 0.34, and October 0.19, or a total of
2.90 for the gro.o1ing season. Although the average annual estimated
diversion requirement and the average annual historical diversions to
the project area are about the same in total amount, there is a wide
variation from year to year and month to month from the estimated re-
quirement for optimum crop production.
59. \Vater righ ts. - Stream flow rec ords at Trinidad renec t the
historical diversion of water upstream from the project area, and no

22

J~~R...
