2309

SITE SELECTION REPORT

Narrows Unit

.'

PURPOSE

The information contained in this report summarizes recent investi-
gations of the Narrows Unit. The report has been prepared for use
b,y members of the Steering Committee--Narrows Project and the
Bureau in guiding the future investigations for this unit.

The report discusses in brevity the features of the unit and possible
plans for operation of these features. It presents the relative
merits of the potential Weld County and Narrows Reservoirs to provide
a sound basis for selecting one of the alternate sites for further
study. In addition, the report discusses the practicability of
flood. control on Bijou Creek at the Hoyt Reservoir site.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Background information is contained in the following U. S. Bureau
of Reclamation reports:

~J..

Narrows Unit, Colorado, Definite Plan Report, June, 1951,
Narrows Unit, Colorado, Status Report, October, 1957,
South Platte Basin Report, June, 1959.

Additional background information is contained in letters and
memoranda exchanged between the Colorado Water Conservation Board
and the Bureau of Reclamation.

PLAN OF DEVELOPMENT

General

The contemplated plan of development for the Narrows Unit is much
broader in scope than that contained in the Narr01-TS Unit Definite
Plan Report of 1951. The presently contemplated plan could benefit
lands and municipalities in the South Platte Valley from Denver to
the State line, ,mereas the original plan excluded IY.>tential
service between Denver and Kersey, Colorado. The new plan would
include both upstream and downstream storage reservoirs on the
South Platte River, and would include features for controlling flood.
waters from Bijou Creek. The contemplated plan would meet the basic
objectives of regulating and controlling the available water supply
of the basin for optimum conservation and use.

.'

1
