CHAPTER VII

CONSIDERATION OF ALTERNATIVES

o
1'0
C.Jl
-..J

be transported to two collection reservoirs and then
pumped to an evaporation reservoir on the east flank of
the dome.

..

6.

Shallow collection wells, evaporation reservoir.--This
alternative includes collection of seepage water by
shallow collection wells and then disposal of the water
by pumping to an evaporation reservior.

.'

7. Tile drain collection, oil field disposal.--This alterna-
tive involves collection by a tile drain system along the
south flank of the dome and then transporting the water
to a collection reservoir. The water would then be
transported on to the Wilson Creek Oil Field to a ter-
minal reservoir where facilities would be located for
disposal wells.

8. Nondevelopment.--This alternative would call for no
action on the Meeker Dome salinity problem. Resources
would be devoted elsewhere to reduce the salt loading in
the Lower Colorado Basin.

9. Local damage problem.--This alternative would be used to
alleviate local landowners' salinity problems by either
paying damages, acquiring land for wildlife habitat, or
reclaiming the land through drainage and leaching of
salts.

Public Involvement

The public was an integral part of the planning process. At the
first public meeting in March 1979, a planning team was organized con-
sisting of representatives from interested government agencies, local
landowners, and area residents. Periodic planning team workshops were
planned to coincide with public meetings, and a mailing list of inter-
ested parties was developed. The planning team and public meeting
approach was designed:

1. To keep the public and interested agencies informed of
project status and future activities;

2.

To allow the public to become directly involved in the
project either as planning team members or as partici-
pants in the public meetings;

.

3. To determine local concerns, needs, and interests; and

4. To assist in public scoping and in the formulation of
alternative solutions to the salt loading problem.

In June 1979, the team and public met again to develop alternate
concepts for collecting, treating, using, and/or disposing of saline

26
