Onfarm water application can be reduced considering the normal flow characteristics of the Virgin River. Occa- sionally, however, late season water shortages occur. The current water manage- ment practices are closely linked to river flow because of the lack of water storage facilities. Crops may be overwatered in the winter and spring and underwatered in the summer because of the seasonal differences in the available water for diversion. Consequently crops may require additional water in the summer and water application could be reduced in the winter and spring. However, spring and winter water can not be used to satisfy occasional late summer irri- gation deficiences. Improved yields for Alternative 1 and 2 were estimated considering improved soil-air-water proportions in the root zone. Yields for Alternative 2 were adjusted eonsidering the occasional late season water deficiency. !/ The rating scale is from 1 to 5: 1, unsuited; 2, poor; 3, fair or neutral; 4 good; and 5, excellent.
