ALTERNATIVE 2
UPSTREAM MAINSTEM STORAGE

The upper mainstem storage site con-
sidered in this alternative is the Two
Forks Reservoir, located just down-
stream from the confluence of the
North Fork of the South Platte River
and the mains tern South Platte River
near the town of South Platte, The
total capacity of the proposed Two
Forks Reservoir is 975,000 acre-feet.
which includes flood control. sedi-
ment. water supply and surcharge
storage. This storage capacity would
provide an average deliverable water
supply of 30,800 acre,feet.

Evaluation

The market-valued outputs of this
alternative would be municipal and
industrial water supply and hydroe.
lectric power. Net annual economic
benelits are estimated to be $7,0 mil-
lion, This amounts to slightly greater
than 1.4 percent rate of return on the
estimated required investment of $492
million in construction costs,

-~

.

An estimated 66 residences within the
area would need to be relocated due
to construction 01 the project. The
community of Buffalo Creek could
change from a low-density recrea-
tional area to a high. density recrea-
tional center with commercial uses.
There would probably be a subse-
quent increase in need for govern-
ment and services.

Inflow into the proposed upstream
mainstem reservoir would contain rel-
atively small dissolved solids concen-
trations.

The construction and operation of an
upstream reservoir would result in the
inundation of about 6,500 acres 01
wildlife habitat, The inundated reach
would also change the river lishery to
a lake fishery,

The average hydroelectric capacity at
the proposed Two Forks project
would be 76 megawatts in winter and
77 megawatts in summer.

'0
:..p-t
~ <I')., "t, if
~--C, >- "f""'r (,..-
.
