Project area is somewhat distant from major trade

centers with Montrose about 70 miles to the Northwest, Cortez

about 100 miles to the South and Grand Junction about 125 miles to

the North.

At present there are four major collection and distibution

systems that bring water and irrigate land in the area. These

systems rely, mainly on spring snowmelt in the high mountains to

the south and east of the lands served. The four systems are:

(a) the J & M Hughes Ditch, originating on Fall Creek, above Wood

Lake, irrigating land on Beaver Mesa. This system has no storage

facility.

(b) The Farmers Water Development Company, operating the Gurley

Ditch system and irrigating land in the Norwood-Redva1e area.

Gurley reservoir is operated in conjunction with this system.

218
sm/wp
