~
~
~
.
~
~

,SYLLABUS

rna Arkansas, White and Red River basins ars subjeot to wide
range of climatic conditions. Average annual preoipitation ranges from
60 in~hes in the eastern part of the Red ,River basin in Louisiana to as
little as 12 inohes in psrts:of the Arkansas River basin in Colorado.
Storms over the basins range from large-sasle storms of several days
duration to intense storms of small areal extent but with point-rainfalls
exoeeding 20 inohes in 12 hours; Mean annual temperatures range from
67 degrees in the extreme southeast to 35 degrees in the extreme north-
west.

Three major river systems oomprise the surfaoe-water re-
souroes of the basin. ~~e Arkansas River rises in the Rooky Mountains
in Colorado and flows in an easterly direotion 1,459 miles, joining
the Mississippi River near Arkansas City, Ark~nsas. The river and its
tributaries drain parts of Colorado, New Mexioo, Kansas, Oklahoma,
Texas, Missouri, and Arkansas. Total drainage area is 160,645 square
miles, and average annual oontribution of water to the Mississippi
River is more than 35 million aore-feet.

'rbe White River rises in the Boston Mountains in northwestern
Arkansas and flows in a northerly direotion into Missouri 'and then in
a southeasterly direotion, joining the Mississippi River above Arkansas'
City, Arkansas. The total length of the river is 720 miles. Total
drai~ge area is 27,765 square miles and average annual oontribution
of water to the Mississippi River is about 22 million aore-feet.

The Red River rises in the High Plains in eastern New
Mexioo and flows 1,222 miles in an easterly and southeasterly direotion
to southern Louisiana where it disor~rges into Old ,River, the six-mile
oonnecting link between the Mississippi River and the Atohafalaya
River and then southward to the Gulf of Mexioo. The total drainage
area of the river and its tributaries in New Me:~ioo, Texas, Oklahoma,
Arkansas, and Louisiana is 93,450 square miles. Its average annual
contribution of water to the Mississippi River is about 36 million
acre-feet.

Ground-water reservoirs underlie parts of the basins. Some
of these reservoirs are of large storage oapaoity and from them
thousands of wells now pump several million aore-feet annua, lly. Other
ground-water resBrvoirs, although medioore inoomparison, are of im-
portance to the people of the basin, particularly those looated in
areas where surface supplies are poor or non-existent.

The hydrology and hydrologio interrelationship of various
water utilization and flood control projeots and programs are discussed.

xiii
