Jones

Objectives:

To rehabilitate Setchfield Lake with desirable species of warm water
game fish.

Techniques Used:

Desirable species of warm water game and pan fishes are to be
stocked in SetcCifield Lake. Rock shelters were created to provide shelter
and nesting 2reas.

Discussion:

Setcbfield Lake located 20 miles south and west of. Las Animas,
Colorado, was purchased by the Game and Fish Department from private
individuals in the Fall of 1957. This irrigation impoundment, formerly
known as Muddy Creek Reservoir, was completed in the early 1920's.
The reservoir was used to irrigate homesteads to the north of the structure
in Bent County. The company went broke, and the darn was only in partial
use during the last few years. Considerable repairs were necessary to
make the structure safe and to make the gates operational again.

The lake in years past produced good fishing for several species of
warm water fish. However, recently large numbers of rough fish,
principally carp, were found in the drainage. The 75 sgu<,.re miles of
water shed was checked and all of the standing water derrised to remove
the rough fish. This will assu!:'e the lake and water sr.ed remain free of
these undesirable species as the dam is so situated that these fish cannot
migrate back into the lake frem below the dam. Therefore, there was no
need to derris the lake basin proper as it was dry for several months.
The dam proper was drained to facilitate repairs to the dam and the gates.

The work on the dam was done during the early part of 1958 and the
d2m was bspected and the gates closed on the 15th of June 1958. The
water inflo'NS and los Ses will be found in Table 1.
