APPENDIX I:

Brief summaries of results for sets of collections processed in FY 97 for Recovery Program
investigations (abstracted from LFL data reports submitted to source or responsible agencies).

(1) ISMP Collections.

(a) Fall Seine Collections, Colorado and Lower Green Rivers, September 19-28, 1995
(cataloging and report completed from FY 96).

This set consists of preserved fishes from 157 collections taken during the 1995 fall
monitoring program-31 from the Colorado River in Colorado (river miles 184.1-
140.1), 83 from the Colorado River in Utah (river miles 108.8-0.0 above the
confluence with the Green River), and 43 from the lower Green River in Utah (river
miles 116.0-4.0). The specimens have been cataloged (LFL 2&205-2&934) and are
stored as part of the Larval Fish Laboratory Collection for voucher and future study
(e.g., identification of humpback chub).

In all, the collections received contain 48,559 preserved fish (an average ofJ09
specimens per collection) representing 17 species. Nearly 98% are non-native. Of all
fish, 98% are cyprinids (95% of all fish in the Colorado reach of the Colorado River,
98% in the Utah reach of the Colorado River, and nearly 100% in the Green River).
By species, red shiner, fathead minnow, sand shiner, westem mosquitofish, bluehead
sucker, and speckled dace respectively account for 51 %, 27%, 17%, 1%, 1 %, and 1 %
of the fish-57%, 11%,22%, 1 %, 3%, and 4% in the Colorado reach of the Colorado
River; 43%, 37%,15%,1%,1%, and >0% (28 specimens) in the Utah reach; and
67%,12%, 19%, >0% (I specimen), >0% (17 specimens), and >0% (31 specimens) in
the Green River. For this year, preserved collections included 311argemouth bass;
only one was preserved in 1994 collections. A single 101-rom Utah chub was taken
at the confluence of the Colorado and Green Rivers.

Preserved collections included many more native chub and Colorado squawfish than
in 1994. All but 2 of 132 chub in 1995 collections were taken from the Colorado
River, mostly the Colorado reach (80 specimens). They range in size from 12 to 54
mm TL (total length) and all but 20 have 9 dorsal and 9 anal fin rays suggesting that
most are roundtail chub. Most others have 10 anal fm rays and one also had 10 dorsal
fin rays suggesting the possibility of humpback chub and even bonytail. No Colorado
squawfish were taken in the Colorado reach of the Colorado River, 64 were taken in
the Utah reach, and 8 in the Green River. The preserved Colorado squawfish range in
size from 11 to 28 mm TL.

(b) Spring Seine Collections, Colorado River, Utah, 17 March Through 3 April 1996
(counts, measures, cataloging, and report completed from FY 96). .

This set consists of preserved fish from 55 collections taken during the 1996 spring
