Jensen Reach (n=15), but at least one was encountered in each
of the remaining three reaches. Smallmouth bass (n=ll) were
encountered in the Ouray Reach (n=5) , Island Park Reach (n=5)
and Jensen Reach (n=l). One green sunfish each was observed
in the Ouray Reach and the Island Park Reach. A single
walleye was encountered in the Jensen Reach. Rainbow trout
were captured in the Jensen (n=3) , Island Park (n=3) and
White River (n=l) reaches. One brown trout was caught in
Jensen Reach and another was caught in the Island Park Reach.
Channel catfish (n=35) were encountered in all reaches but
the Ouray Reach.

Table 4. Because of
this, only 39 of a possible 42 backwaters were sampled. No
backwaters were located between RM 235 and RM 230.

Twenty-three Colorado squawfish were captured in 6
different backwaters. All squawfish were captured between
RM 294.6 (Spring Hollow) and RM 248.9 (Ouray). These fish
ranged from 28 mm - 49 mm total length with mean of 35.5
mm. This is the second lowest catch of YOY squawfish since
1986.

Chubs were the most numerous native species encountered. A
total 138 chubs was caught in 11 different backwaters. All
chubs were caught between RM 318.9 (Split Mountain) and RM
279.3 (Horseshoe Bend). These fish ranged in length from
25 mm to 104 mm. Mean total length for chubs was 40.9 mm.
All chubs on which counts were made had dorsal/anal ray
ratio of 9/9, indicating they were roundtail chubs. Chubs
were 10 times as numerous this year as in 1996.

A total 118 suckers was captured during sampling: 94

6
