I
I
I
I
.

.

.

~ ~ (" ~-.
. , L.:
Ii ,J:u 0.

to evaluate all cultural values in Project areas for eligibility to
the National Register of Historic Places, as well as any nominations
that have resulted therefrom. Such consideration should be afforded
to both historical and archeological resources.

Response: Fryingpan-Arkansas Project lands, lands to be acquired for
Project purposes, and lands adjacent to Project lands have been or
will be surveyed to identify and determine the Project's effect on his-
toric and cultural resources. The Colorado State Historical Society
identified two areas at Twin Lakes as being of National Registry
quality and they have now nominated these areas to the National
Register as historic districts. One of the districts includes the
village of Twin Lakes and the other includes the Interlaken Hotel
complex on the south side of Twin Lakes. The Bureau is cooperating
with the State Historic Preservation Officer and the Forest Service
to formulate a plan to preserve the historical significance of the
two districts. Compliance will be as prescribed in 36 CFR 800.

Archeological sites have been discovered in the area of Project
features. However, Dr. William Buckles, Laboratory of Anthropology,
Southern Colorado State College, has concluded that with the possible
exception of site 5CF7 that construction of Project features will not
destroy important stratified archeological sites. Further investiga-
tions of site SCF7 have been recommended. No actions relating to
5CF7, which has been nominated to the National Register, will be
undertaken prior to compliance with 36 CFR 800.

XI-255
