<br />57 <br /> <br /> <br />iHHJ8 I) 8 <br /> <br />of Commerce, Modern topographic maps are of great value in <br />many activities related to water resources, particularly in the <br />establishment of flood plain management programs, <br /> <br />3, Inventory Studies <br /> <br />Inventories of programs and available information are <br />accomplished periodically by the State water agencies and <br />reported primarily by means of an annual or biennial report, <br />There is no required central repository of programs or <br />information and interagency exchange of information is informal <br />and irregular. There is an obvious need for maintaining an <br />up to date composite inventory of research and data collection <br />programs both to prevent wasteful duplication and to guide <br />future studies. <br /> <br />4, Planning <br /> <br />The Iowa Natural Resources Council has primary responsi- <br />bility for comprehensive planning of the water resources of the <br />State, The Council is charged with coordinating state planning <br />with local and national planning and to undertake the resolution <br />of any conflicts that may arise between the water resources <br />policies, plans,and projects of the federal government and those <br />of the state, its agencies or its people, <br /> <br />The Council must give consideration to the needs of <br />agriculture, industry, health, fish and wildlife, recreation, <br />pollution and allied matters as they relate to water resources. <br />An informal organization including representatives of all State <br />water resource agencies, the State Coordinating Group for <br />Comprehensive Water Resources Planning, has been formed on <br />invitation of the Resources Council to obtain the views of all <br />interests and to prevent duplication of effort in the formulation <br />of a comprehensive state plan for water and related land <br />resources, <br /> <br />5.
