<br />eC_((H <br /> <br />POTENTIAL WATER SOURCES <br /> <br />SCOPE. The Congress of the United States in the legislation authorizing the <br />High Plains Study directed the Corps of Engineers through the Secretary of <br /> <br />Commerce to "consider all past and ongoing studies, plans and work on depleted <br /> <br />water resou rces in the regi on, and to exami ne the feas i bi1 i ty of va ri ous <br /> <br />alternatives to provide adequate water supplies in the area, including but not <br /> <br />limited to, the transfer of water from adjacent areas." The previous studies <br />which were deemed to have the most potential utilized major rivers at locations <br /> <br />outside the Ogallala and in several cases outside of the six states directly <br /> <br />participating in the High Plains Study. A map showing the sources that were <br /> <br />considered is included as Figure i. <br /> <br />As discussed earlier the High Plains Study Council authorized the Corps by HPSC <br /> <br />Resolution 8 to limit the number of alternative routes to 4. They further <br /> <br />specified the sources considered be basically the following: <br /> <br />ROUTE <br /> <br />ASSUMED SOURCES OF TRANSPORT WATER <br /> <br />A <br /> <br />Missouri River at Ft. Randall, South Dakota <br /> <br />B <br /> <br />Missouri River near St. Joseph, Missouri <br /> <br />C <br /> <br />Northern Leg, White River at Clarendon, Arkansas <br />Arkansas River at Van Buren, Arkansas <br />Southern Leg, Ouachita River at Camden, Arkansas <br />Red River at Fulton, Arkansas <br /> <br />D <br /> <br />White River at Clarendon, Arkansas <br />Arkansas River at Pine Bluff, Arkansas <br />Ouachita River at Camden, Arkansas <br />Red River at Fulton, Arkansas <br />Sabine River at Tatum, Texas <br />Sulphur River at Darden, Texas <br /> <br />During the study the High Plains Liaison Committee recommended that two addi- <br /> <br />tional sources, the Sulphur and Sabine Rivers, be used in both routes C and D. <br /> <br />25 <br />
