SUMMARY SHSST
Mesa-Delta,M&I Ground-W~ter Study

November 1983

o
(:7.l
~:)
CJt
....1
o

LOC^TlON

The Mesa-Delta M&I Ground-Water Study ,area lies
i.n the 'Upper' Color, ado Rivet Basin in west-
e,entral Colorado and genera.liy CODsists of Mesa
and Delta Counties. It includes the Grand Mes.,
a high basalt ,capped platesu in the eastel"n part
of the area, and surrounding valleys formed by
tbe Colorado and Gunnison Rivers and their
tributaries.

PURPOSE

The study wovld be conducted to identify
alternatives to develop g%ound-water reserves
believed to be available on Grand Mesa; for
increased mun~cipal and industrial 'use in the
valleys.

The: specific objectives of the Study would be CO ..
identify the needs and opportunities in the area
and to evaluate the capacity of local .resources
to tQe$t ,those 'condition4t. Alternative plan6
would be developed a,nd 'evall, lated ,to satisfy .the
needs and to maintaia. and prate,ct existing
values and development.

"'G<
~~
'(s>o
'1-1
I
I
I
,
I

I
I
I
,
I

Annual municipal, industrial, and rural domestic
water shortages by the year 2020 are prQject~d at
10,000 to 30,OGO .c're-feet for -the Grand Vdley,
5,000 to 15,000 acre-feet for the south slope of
Grand Mesa and in ,the North Fo~k Valley, and 2,000
to ',000 acr8"'feet for the Plat'eau Valley on the
notth slope of th~ mesa.

The geologic and hydrologic conditions' on Gr4ad
Mesa indicate the pos'sibility of developing a
ground-water -reservo.ir to supplement local sup-
plies. This would provide high quali~y water with
little pretreatment required and a constant supply
during periods of drought with less development
cost, - land' requirement., and environmental impacts
than would be associated with a surface reservoir.

An opport, unity may also exist to gii!'n~rate dec....
trieity as_ the water is delivered. from tb'e 10,00.0-
foot elevation of the mQuntain top to the less than
5,OOO-foot elevation of the valley floor. It is
conceivable _ t~a.t: tl1~ pumping cos_ts to rew.ove the
water from the ground could be more than offset by
the power produced.

~L1NA

<
,. ---
.J
I
9.0'----
feO.
,
,-1
~"'"
~~,.~~
+~~'V
~
...J
,

fORK
