I can see some adoontages 10 a wild and f.cenic rivers program,
but would rather not get iuvolved with the federaT government
Do states hove such programs. too?
A. Yes, many states have their own scenic rivers programs that can
offer advantages over the federal program. First. the state gov-
ernment is closer to your valley and may be more aware of y::>ur
land's assets and liabilities. State scenic rivers administrators can
often spend more time talking to landowners and working out a
plan that is in the best interests of residents. Also, if the river is
added to a state program, it will probably receive less publicity,
so fewer people VJiIl be drawn to it as a result of designation.

Q. Is there any way to get my land under an easement without hav~
ing the river added to a wild and scenic rivers program?
A. There may be, depending on the laws of your state. If your ~tate
or local government has a system for accepting easements, you
can donate your development rights. In many states, th~e are
counted as charitable, tax deductible contributions. Also, cer.
tain private organizations can accept tax deductible donations ('If
land or easements for conservation. Remember, however, that
protecting your property from the pressures of land specula.tion
does not guarantee that you \..\/ill continue to live in a pleasant
rural setting, unless surrounding properties are also protect~d :n
some way.

,

~~~.., ~~ ;..,~~~t1;t.:>~~~.., - .-..(.
'If.
