EIS TEAM PRESENTS ALTERNATIVES

Information in this article summarizes the description of preliminaty alternatives for the future operation of Glen
Canyon Dam.

Ten alternatives have been identified to provide a range of water release patterns and supporting actions in response
to EIS scoping issues and concerns. These preliminaty alternatives are being presented to the public for comment
as to adequacy in representing a reasonable range of actions for evaluations during the GCD-EIS process.

In formulating alternatives, the GCD-EIS team members addressed a range of operations for Glen Canyon Dam.
Much of this work necessitated an understanding of how the powerplant currently operates or would be operated
with the different alternatives. Different operations translate into different downstream flows. Realistic analysis
of a variety of flow patterns are keyed to assessing future management options.

The Alternatives

Ten preliminaty alternatives are presented in 3 groups: two Mimic Pre-dam Flows, three provide Steady Flows,
and five provide varying levels of Fluctuating Flows.

These alternatives are listed in figure 3 and described in more detail later in subsequent paragraphs.

Figure 3 - Three Groups of Alternatives

7
