- ~..- ",
\..i~{ ;

The South Platte River Valley in the Narrows area has been ravaged
by floods many times. Significant floods of record occurred in 1844, 1864,
1867, 1876, 1894, 1921, 1933, 1935, 1965, 1969, and 1973. The Narrows
Reservoir will reduce flood damages in the valley downstream by an ,average
of $800,000 annually, as' estimated by ,the Corps of Engineers, Department
of the Army. Floods from Bijou Creek will not be controlled by Narrows
Dam and Reservoir. '

The National Park Service has prepared a recreation plan for the unit.'
The Fish and Wildl ife Service similarly has formulated a plan to compensate
for habitat losses and enhance fish and wildlife resources of the area.
Both plans have been reviewed and approved by appropriate State agencies
and have been incorporated to the extent possible under the authorization.

The basic Narrows Reservoir that will be needed for irrigation and
flood cor.trol will, by itself, provide substantial recreation and fish-
wildlife values. However, these basic values will be increased
SUbstantially by the acquisition and stabilization of the water surface
of adjacent Jackson Lake, by the acquisition of additional lands, by the
use of some basic reservoir rights-of-way lands for fish and wildlife and
recreation purposes, and by the construction of specifiC recreation
facll i ti es.

WHAT ARE THE FEATURES OF THE UNIT?

Dam'and Reservoir

The Narrows Dam ~ill be an earthfill structure. In order to provide
a solid dam foundation and control reservoir seepage under the north and
part of the south abutment, the native soil, consisting primarily of silts,
sands, and gravels will be excavated to bedrock (Pierre Formation) and
backfilled with impervious materials. The upstream face of the dam will
be protected by rock riprap or soil cement. The downstream face will be
covered with 12 inches of topSOil and seeded to grass.

Two separate spillways will be required to handle antitipated floods--
a gated concrete lined service spillway will discharge controlled floods
back to the river. In addition, an emergency spillway designed to handle
extremely large floods will be built on the north abutment of the dam.
An outlet works for releasing stored water to the river will be located
on the north side of the dam. An outlet to the Fort Morgan Canal will be
located on the south side of the dam.

2
