,.. -- 1-..
\.:0"'.)

WHAT IS THE NARROWS UNIT?

The Narrows Unit is a plan for development and conservation of
water and land resources .in the Colorado portion of the South Platte
River Basin. The plan has been prepared by the Bureau of Reclamation
at the request, and'with the assistance, of the State of Colorado, the
Lower South Platte Water Conservancy District (LSPWCD), and the Central
Colorado Water Conservancy District (CCWCD). The unit was authorized
for construction and operation by the Congress under Public Law 91-389
on August 28, 1970.

The plan of development provides for: (a) construction of the
Narrows Dam and Reservoir for multiple-purpose water storage. (b)
incorporation of the existing nearby Jackson Reservoir for project use,
(c) acquisition of lands for recreation and fish and wildlife purposes,
and (d) 'construction of facil Hies specifically for the recreation and
fish-wildlife programs.

The Narrows Dam site across the South Platte River is about 7 miles
upstream (west) from Fort Morgan, Colorado, and about 70 airline miles
downstream (northeast) from Denver. Jackson Lake is located on the
north side and above the top of the flood pool of the Narrows Reservoir.

No Federal construction of canals, laterals, or other water conveyance
facilities is planned as part of the unit. Supplemental irrigation water
will be released through the dam into:.the South Platte River for subsequent
diversion by existing irrigation facilities. A special outlet will be
provided through the dam to deliver water to the Fort Morgan Canal to
replace diversion and conveyance facilities inundated by the reservoir.

WHAT WILL THE UNIT DO?

The Narrows Unit wi 11 serve multiple' purposes. It will supply
supplemental irrigation water, provid~ flood control, increase recreational
opportunities, and mitigate and enhance fish and wildlife resources.

Storage water will be released as necessary from the reservoir to
supplement the irrigation supplies within the irrigated service area of
the Lower South Platte Water Conservancy District and furnished by
exchange to the Central Colorado Water Conservancy District. This
supplemental irrigation water is estimated to average 119,400 acre-feet
annually.
