Progress is continuing on three of the four authorized units under the Salinity Control Prolect (Paradox, Grand Valley, Las Vegas Wash). The accomplistlmenls in fiscal year 1983 are as follows Paradox Valley Unit: Two Independent consultants who reviewed the construction specifications for the deep injection weJl advised against proceeding at the proposed well local ion because of anticipated problems drilling through unstable salt formations. Based on their reco~mendations, alternative sites are being considered. When a new site is selected, the well will be redesigned and drilling will proceed. The schedule changes will delay the contract award by about 14 monttlS to March 1985 Grand Valley Unit: Except lor clean.up items, construction is complete on Stage One of the Grand Valley Unit. The Government Highline Canal, Government Highline laterals and the moss and debris removal structure have all been completed. Monitoring is continuing to verify salinity reductions. Data collection for the Stage Two area is continuing. Design data collection is under way on the West End Government Highline Canal and its laterals, and the Independent Ranch- 8 Grand Valley laterals mitigate salinity. men's laterals. A reevaluation of the original evaporation pond/desalting plan has resulted in considera- tion of new concepts for salinity control. An October 1982 status report recommended pro- ceeding with a verification program to convey low salinity industrial cooling water past an area of highly saline soil, preventing ground- water infiltration and salt pickup. The 10 units authorized lor planning under the Water Quality Improvement Program are at various stages within the planning process as follows: Big Sandy River Unit A Joint State/Reclamalion Report was sent to Ihe Sfale of Wyoming in December 1982 and was presented to the Stale Legislature. A meeting was held wifh Ihe Bureau of Land Management, Ine National Park Service, and Wyoming State archeologists to determine locations where project pipelines could cross historic trails with the least damage.
