Improper opera-
tion of the motor brakes at Iron )lountain was corrected. All
delivery pipes were unwatered and their interior coatinJ(s repaired
where sliRht breaks had been caused hy installation of salt-\-elocity
testinR equipment. The lifting nuts in the six discharJlc valves
at Eagle and Hayfield were found to be defective. and replacements
were furnished oy the manufacturers and installed by the District
in August 19-tO. Difficulties with discharge vah'es at Intake and
Gene are under discussion with the manufacturers.
One of the main power transformers at Hayfield was taken out
of service in )lay 19-10, following the disco\'ery of a defective
grounding connection between the core and frame which had re-
sulted in damage to the core. The spare transfonner for Eagle
)[ountain and Hayfield plants was placed in service and the dam-
aged transformer dismantled. The transformers at the other
plants were inspected and, with the cooperation of the manufac-
turer, steps were tll.ken to prevent similar trouble. "Iaterial for
extensh'e repairs to the Hayfield transformer has been ordered
lmd will be instnlled by the manufacturer ~l.s soon as received.
In June 1940 the pumping plants were closed to all \'isitors ex-
cept those havinJ{ passes issued by the Los Angeles office.
