NEWLIN <br />Soils and Foundation Engineering <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />CHARLES W. NEWLIN. senior engineer with Dames & Moore. has considerable manage- <br />ment and consultation experience on numerous soils and foundation investigations for a wide <br />variety of industrial. commercial and governmental projects. He also has extensive academic experi- <br />ence, including teaching and administrative assignments at Swarthmore College and Arizona State <br />University. At Arizona State University he was associate professor. professor. and chairman of the <br />civil engineering department, respectively. His principal areas of research and teaching include soil <br />mechanics and foundation engineering, ground water and seepage, shear strength of soils. and <br />consolidation of cohesive soils. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />Dr. Newlin has had considerable experience with design and review of earth dams and has <br />been associated with the Soil Conservation Service; Mueser, Rutledge, Wentworth & Johnson; U.S. <br />Geological Survey; Harza Engineering Company; and Dames & Moore. He directed research at <br />Arizona State University involving the drainage of dams subjected to instantaneous dmwdown. <br />Results of this study were published in the Journal of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Division, <br />ASCE. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />He received his Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from the Rose-Hulman <br />Institute of Technology, his Master of Science degree from Harvard University and his Ph.D. from <br />Northwestern University. He is the recipient of many awards, scholarships, and honor societies, <br />including Sigma Xi, Sigma Tau, Tall Beta Pi, National Science Foundation Faculty Fellow, Ameri- <br />can Men of Science, Who's Who in the West. Ford Foundation. Faclllty Development, University of <br />Michigan. and American Oil Company Fellowship. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />Dr. Newlin is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
