--Ill

,

, -

Chapter 2

. ..... ~--.

WATER REQUIREMENTS

2.1 Purpose

.

The purpose of this chapter is to develop water requirement estimates
\
~r irrigation of the proposec 7,500 acres of land on the Ute Mountain

Ute Indian Reservation to be served by Dolores Project waters.

2.2 Choice of Delivery Canal and Measuring Station

Delivery of irrigation water under the present proposal will be made

through an earth-lined Towaoc Canal. Under an initial proposal, irrigation,

. municipal and industrial water appropriated to the Ute Indians were to be
,-
conveyed through the Rocky Ford Ditch to the head of the Towaoc area.

frQMcthere. the West Towaoc Canal would carry the water.

~c;__The proposed Towaoc Canal is located west of Cortez. It starts from

the Dolores Tunnel connected to McPhee Reservoir and runs in a general

southwestern direction to the irrigable lands. The length of the new

canal will be approximately 42 miles. This is about five miles shorter

than the previou::.ly proposed layout. The layout of the canal within.

the Indian lands will be such that sufficient gravity head is generated

for the proposed sprinkler irrigation systems.

It appears that the new proposal offers several administrative and
technical advantages over carriage through the Rocky Ford Ditch. Some

of the positive factors are as follows:

1. The Rocky Ford Ditch is owned by the private Montezuma Valley

Irrigation District. Thus. arrangements have to be worked out to

secure carriage rights.

2. The canal must be renovated to increase its capacity to carry

--,
