.

exist whereby a canal could be lined while still in service, but the

effectiveness must be demonstrated, and apparently the costs are
quite high as compared to building an entirely new lined reach parallel

l\)
W to the old unlined reach of canal needing the lining.
o
cr,

Plan

Two ponding tests were performed on the All-American Canal to

determine the amount of water lost by seepage. One test was per-
formed on a section of the canal between Pilot Knob and Drop 1; the

other was done by ponding water between the Wistaria Check and the

West Side Main Canal. These tests and Imperial I rrigation District

flow measurements resulted in the water salvage estimates shown in

Table 1.

.

These estimates indicate that a new lined reach between Pilot

Knob and Drop 1 would be the only reach capable of providing the

required 42,000 acre-feet of water annually. The entire reach between

Pilot Knob and Drop 1 would be replaced since it would be impractical

to build a new lined reach just long enough to salvage 42,000 acre-feet

of water (present structures on the existing canal, possible "tie-in"

points between the old and new reaches, and topography would gener-

ally dictate the actual length of the new canal). The 48,000 acre-feet

of water which can be expected to be salvaged from this reach would
be 6,000 acre-feet in excess of that required to replace the reject

stream, so this additional water will be treated as an economic benefit.

.

The new lined reach would be 15.4 miles long, have a capacity
of 9,155 ft3/s, lie close to the Mexican border, and save approximately

9
