The Amity Mutual Irrigation Company

1445

President's Report

To The Amity Mutual Irr;gat;on Company

TO TIlE DIRECTORS AND STOCKHOLDERS:

An open winter with ver.y little precipitation, less than an inch in the
Holly district and slightly more in the area east of Lamar J left our soil
dry and in poor condition for early planting. A short supply of snow in the
mountains was responsible for low nows in the Arkansas at Pueblo. Onl,)"
328,100 aJ. of water was measured at Pueblo for the year compared with
410,900 ai. in 1971 and slight!.y less than 700,000 a.f. in 1970.

John Martin Reservoir was very Iowan storage, only 25,64:2 ai. had
accumulated in the 5 months of storage from r\'o\'embcr 1st to April 1st.
Measured water into the reservoir at the official gauges near Las Animas
amounted to only 16,500 aJ. for the 5 months storage period. 10,280 a.f.
from the Arkansas and 6.219 a.e. from the Purgatoire. More than 12,000
a.e. of John Martin storage was from accretions to the reservoir that are
not measured.

River water was very short throllb'h the season. The Arkansas River
at Las Animas contributed only 69,720 aJ. (or the entire year and the
Purgatoire was onl.y 44,1.50 a.f. making a total of 113,8\10 a1. Onl.}' two
times during the irrigation season was there enough water to call storage
in John Martin reservoir, one in July and one in September, each less
than 5 da~'s.

Water fluctuated throughout the season and our reservoirs were used
to supplement the supptr until emptied. Our Superintendent will give his
report on distribution of this water and the need for repairs on our canals
and machiner.y.

1972 was a short water year, not anl,y in District #67 but in both the
Arkansas and the Purgatoire upstream. The ditches in District #14 below
Pueblo diverted 164,133 aJ. and those in District#17 diverted 383,624 a.f.,
making a total of 547,757 a.f. upstream. Ditches in District #67 diverted
142,626 a.f. and 117,700 aJ. crossed the State Line into Kansas, 37,670 a.e.
of this during winter season.

The control at flood water at the Wile,}' drain is of much concern
to the Amity canal. While we have had no great flooding the last few years,
the large area of this drainage and the quick run off through well defined
chanm31s that have deepened with time and irrigation run of! makes this
more dangerous to our canal each ,year. The Soil Conservation Service
and the Amit,}, canal are working together to try and relieve this problem.
It is hoped that the County Commissioners, the State Highway and con~
cerned land owners above as well as those below will join in sponsoring
this project.

Page 3
