00C491

"The program will begin at the Park where there will be a

display of materials, such as Hydrogel and PAM, and with

information on results produced on demonstration areas throughout

the Arkansas River region. We will also have new trash screen

materials that we are working with made from polyurethane as well

as surge valves and controller, atmometers, probes and other

equipment to improve irrigation water management," said Barbara

Barnett, soil conservationist with the Prowers County NRCS.

The tour will go to the Ed Bates Farm to look at PAM on corn

and drainage problems. "The field we will be seeing was growing

crops in 1994 and now I can't even farm it", said Ed Bates. Luis

Garcia of Chemical and Bioresource Engineering and Tim Gates of

civil Engineering at Colorado State University will discuss some

of the work they will be doing in the area concerning drainage

and salinity. The group will then go to the Paul Frank farm to

look at drags on a center pivot system. "I feel drags will

improve the infiltration of the water being applied and will

reduce the possibility of salt burn from the saline water being

applied to the alfalfa", Valliant said,

Availability of phosphate to the plant may be a limiting

factor in alfalfa production in this area especially with the

salinity of the water and the application of sulfuric acid

materials is being demonstrated by Cory Thompson on one of his

alfalfa and corn fields. Dr. Steven Petrie of the UNOCAL

Corporation will discuss the use of Phos-Phuric and N-Phuric on

these fields,
