I\)
~
w
~

in early 1981. Construction of the pipe laterals is expected
to take about 2 years. Fiscal Year 1980 funding for construe"'"
tion in Grand Valley amounted to $3,650,000. Appropriations'
have been made for FY 1981 of $6,289,000.

Plann~ng for Stage Two of the Grand Valley Unit is
being initiated, with the plan of study and the public
involvement programs now being prepared. That planning

is being scheduled such that a draft Definite Plan Report
and Draft Environmental Statement will be available in
early 1984, allowing for a construction start on Stage Two
in Fiscal Year 1985.

Data gathering is continuing to determine the nature

and extent of the salt loading to the Colorado River. An
extensive drilling program has been completed to obtain
subsurface geological data along all of the major canals
in the Valley. The core samples obtained will yield
information which will affect the engineering design of
the canals and laterals.

Las Vegas Wash Unit - Current activities include the
drilling and testing of several shallow and deep ground-water
wells to verify water movement assumptions and refine water
and salt movement budgets. As those studies conclude at
the end of FY 1980, activities will shift toward preparing

a comprehensive plan that is compatible with plans for
sewage treatment and associated nutrient removal now being

developed jointly by the EPA and state and local governments.

-9-
