of plant nutrients from various sources (discharges of wastes,
urban runoff, drainage from agricultural lands), and (2) canalizing
rivers. When one examines the remedial approaches now available,
they fall into four areas: chemical, biological, mechanical, and
ecological control. Ecological control, designed to make the
environment less productive, is the remedial approach of choice.
Knowledge to permit application of some remedial approaches is
now available, but new knowledge to be generated through research
is needed to more effectively: (1) slow down nutrient input;
(2) make nutrients already present unavailable; (3) remove nutrients
in the form of plant crops, such as waterweeds and bottom sediments;
(4) interfere with sediment-water interchange; (5) modify appropriate
physical aspects of the environment; and (6) create and stimulate
destructive algal diseases. In the National Eutrophication Research
Program, research in these areas is underway or planned.
Business Meeting

Mr. Conaway, Secretary of the Committee, announced that the l53rd
meeting of the Committee would be held at Jackson Lake Lodge, Grand
Teton National Park, on June 26, 27, and 28.

Mr. Grindberg moved that a resolution contained in Governor Guy's
banquet address be approved by the Committee. Mr. Summers of
Missouri seconded the motion.

The resolution pertained to the problem of bank stabilization
below Garrison Dam in North Dakota. The resolution asked MBIAC
to urge the Congress to direct and authorize the United States
Army Corps of Engineers to construct, at Federal expense, the
operation and maintenance of any additional structures needed
to stabilize the banks of the Missouri below Garrison Dam.

After considerable discussion, it waS agreed that action on the
motion should be deferred until the next meeting of the Committee
and the Chairman was directed to request clarification from the
Water Resources Council as to the Committee's authority in matters
of this kind.
