Cherry Creek Darn, completed in 1953, mark2d <br />the first success in control of the river. Built far $15 million, <br />it prevented $130 million damages in the 1965 flaad alane. <br /> <br />Chatfield Dam would have prevented the $325 millian damages <br />caused by that flaad. Naw, constructian af Chatfield is underway <br />and the praject will cantrol a drainage area af more than 3,000 <br />square miles, . <br /> <br />The propased Maunt Carban Dam, an Bear Creek eight miles upstream <br />from its confluence with the Sauth Platte, will be similar to Cherry <br />Creek and Chatfield, <br /> <br />~ <br /> <br />.. <br /> <br />If the 1965 flood had originated in the Bear Creek Basin, it <br />would have inundated the entire flood plain af the creek. Water <br />would have spread to 2,200 feet at the Bear Creek shapping area, <br />Downstream from the Greek Mouth, the fload width would have been <br />2,000 to. 3,000 feet. Mount Carbon is a majar unit in flaod control <br />for metropolitan Denver. <br /> <br />Sauth Platte Redevelapment--Denver <br /> <br />Mr, Lee Jahnson, Administrative Assistant to. Mayor Currigan af <br />Denver, said it required 14 inches of rain during a few hours an the <br />Plum Creek Watershed pouring torrents of water into the South Platte <br />River and resulting in more than $325 million damage in the metra- <br />politan area, to force Denver to take a goad look at the Sauth Platte <br />River Valley.
