OC2186

- 1 -

"

SECTION 1

THE WATERSHED WORK PLAN

FISHERS PEAK - CARBON ARROYOS WATERSHED

Las Animas County, Colorado

JUJ\e 1960

SUMMARY OF PLAN

The proposed project for watershed protection and flood prevention
for Fishers Peak - Carbon Arroyos Watershed is sponsored by the
Purgatoire Soil Conservation District and the City of Trinidad, Colorado,
Technical assistance in preparing the watershed work plan was provided
by the Soil Conservation Service, V. S, Department of Agriculture,
and the Colorado Water Conservation Board. This plan includes a
canbination of land treatment and structural measures that will contribute
directly to soil and water conservation, watershed protection, and
reduction of floodwater, sediment, and erosion damages. No irrigation
developments or other water management structural measures are involved,

The area covered by the watershed work plan consists or 2.30
square miles (1,470 acres) in Las Animas County, Colorado, Approximately
52 per cent of the watershed is wooded grassland. 28 per cent grass-
land, and 20 per cent urban and miscellaneous useage.

-'

The principal watershed problem is floodwater, sediment, and
erosion damage to commercial buildings, streets, bridges, railroads,
and agricultural land along Fishers Peak and Carbon Arroyos in and
adjacent to the City of Trinidad. Rangelands above the City are
being damaged by gully and channel cutting,

.
