placed in the river and some pilot channels might be constructed. The

river could then straighten its own channel and the requirement for

actual cha, nnel construction 11'1 the 1:"1'<1'er wOllld be !:educed.

The first requirement for engineering design would be location sun-eya,

and topography of the area for design of the conveyance channels ar.d

lateral collection systems. Following completion of aquifer testing and

:odeling, we would initiate designs fn~ well systems, conveyance ci~nnels,

the lateral system, transmission ~y~tE~, and chsnnel restoration. Then

we would prepare cost estimates. A~ location gurveya are completed,

right-of-way requirements would be delineated. A reevaluation of the

econo=ie analysis will follow to evallmte the project benefits-and the

overall benefit cost ratio. At the present time we expect that the

Closed Basin Division will cost about $25,500,000; however, that cOSt

eatilllat" is based on the feasibility desi.-_,q. We know they will have to

be modif,ed, and new cost estimates ~ill 'c prepared. All cost estimates

are 8cheduled to be com?leted in February of fiscal year 1977. Bcginning

late in fiscal year 1976, we would begin to put together the definite

pl\in report. The final report is scht;dule:ct to be co~pleted at the end

of- fiscal year 1977. The DPR is an internal document which assures the

COllmIh:sionet' that the project: ill 8t111 vi~lble. It:l.s not circulated like

a feasibility report.

n',e time schedule for definite phn report preparal:ion 18 unusually long

for this study, because of the nature of thi8_ project. Because we are

pump~g from an aquifer, we must determin~ its cnarac,eristic8 before

,-, -, I n 11
tIUUJ- .i.

11

-._~...., .
