Following completion of the pump testing and leaky aquifer testing we

will construct models of the system based on the information gathered in

the testing pilase of the def:lnH~ plan st1"d:les. We would hope to confit'1ll

by these models the capacities and spadnfi, of wells in the stage 1

portion of the projec.t. We will also construct III water quality model to

predict the quality of vater that could b~, delivered to the Rio Grande.

As you are aware, Article III of the Rio Grande Compact limits salvaged

vaters which can be credited to Colorado ..s a part of its compact require-

mente. The percent of sodium ions must be less thari 45 vhen the TPS

exceede 350 p/m in the salvaged vater.

The act authorizes the Secretary to improve the Rio Grande channel as a

part of the Closed Basin Division. This improvement viII begin at the

mouth of th~ Main Conveyance Channel and e~tend to the Colorado-~ev

)4,ax1ro 1I!:"1If'.. lfn.... r"t' v111 ,lllljllll~l1"'P r.Rrry1ne ~Jo11vRe,p.d WArP-TA in "he lUo

Grande vithput flooding of surrounding lands and minimize losses of

salvaged vaters. We have scheduled approximately Ib months for the

channel rectification studies of the definite plan report, because the

channel rectification Vas included in the project au.horization on the

basis of very preliminary and brief consideration. No report of this

conSideration vas published. We do not know the capacity of the river

to accept the salvaged waters, but expect that very little channel

rectification work will physically be clone on the lr1ver. Channel

rectification implies a lesser amount of york than channelization, and

we expect to keep all river channel modifications to the absolute mini-
mum. We a~t1cipate a minimum number of Kellner-type jetties would be

10

{-' n. r'l' r.
i.)~j\:---) .\J
