Meeker Dome Un i t area: Several a bandon gas and 0 il

exploration wells were cleaned and plugged. In October 1981,

o
~
o
'.il

the contractor began a one-year monitoring program to test

results. So far the monitoring of the observation wells has

shown favorable results with the water levels dropping, and

seep measurement stations showing that saline inflow into the

White River appears to be decreasing. Reclamation has de-

cided to monitor for an additional two years to confirm

results.

LaVerkin Springs and Lower Virgin River units:
Concluding reports were issued in December 1981 and March
1982, respectively, for the two units. No satisfactory basis

was found to formulate a project to control salinity in these

areas at this time.

Glenwood-Dotsero Springs Unit:

A recommended plan for

study was selected. The plan, called "West Salt Creek-DG",
is expected to decrease the salt loading to the Colorado
River by an average of 314,000 tons annually. Brine would be

collected from Glenwood and Dotsero Springs and delivered via

140-mile pipeline to contour evaporation ponds for disposal

near West Salt Creek on the Colorado-Utah border. Phase I of

the investigations was conducted by URS Corporation 'of Denver
and planning for Phase II feasibility study is underway.

An alternative to disposal in evaporation ponds is the

proposed "Aquatrain" project. The "Aquatrain" project is a

coal capsule pipeline system which would carry plastic cap-

sules of dry, clean coal using saline water as a transport

-14-
