Wllh <br />some areas 10 be retained in near- <br />wilderness condition while olhers <br />will be developed for more intenSive <br />",. <br />The river offers some outstanding <br />fishing for brown and rainbow trout <br />and is conSidered by lhe Slate as a <br />Class I-Premium Trout Waterway. <br />Most portions of the river are con- <br />sidered unsafe lor boating. <br />The North Fork 01 (he American <br />River in Placer County, Calif., is <br />being sludled by the U S. Forest <br />Service for possible inclusion in <br />the National Wild and Scenic Rivers <br />System. The portion under study is <br />45 miles long It passes through <br />very rugged, scenic, and sometimes <br />inaccessible portions 01 the Sierra <br />Nevada west 01 Lake Tahoe. <br />Because 01 the terrain, access to <br />the river IS QUite limited. and as a <br />result no commercial raftmg cur- <br />rently takes place Prlva1e recrea- <br />tion use IS qUite lim!ted but some <br />potential exists lor increased while- <br />water use. The study area includes <br />much pnvately-owned land inter- <br />spersed With Ta"oe National Forest. <br />T"e upper study limil is a com- <br />munlly known as The Cedars: the <br />lower terminUS is the federally <br />authorized Auburn ReservOir, a mul- <br />llpurpose BUfeau of Reclamalion <br />project sct1eduled for completion in <br />about 5-6 years. <br />The FOfest Service is currently <br />preparing an inlormahon brochure <br />on Management Al1ernatives. T"is <br />is expected to be available for pub- <br />lic distnbutlon early in 1977 Public <br />meetings Will be held at Sacra- <br />mento and Auburn on the a~terna- <br />lives, beginning in February <br />The North Fork 01 1M American <br />is an exist<ng component of the <br />California State Wild and Scemc <br />Rivers System, but t"e State's des- <br />ignation e_tends 11 miles further <br /> <br />26 <br /> <br /> <br />The Green R,w':f below Flaming Gorge <br />Dam In Urah, <br /> <br />upstream, to Mt Meadow Lake The <br />Stale i!'lilialed and funded a water- <br />way management plan m 1976. <br />Through a Memorandum of Agree- <br />ment, the Forest Service will keep <br />the State inlormed of all Foresl <br />Service study fmdings, recommen- <br />dations, and proposed actIons prior <br />10 public release of such publica- <br />tions. <br />The Tuolumne River on t"e wesl <br />slope of the Sierra Nevada in Cali- <br />fornia is currently under joint study <br />by the U.S. Forest Service of the <br />Depar1ment of Agriculture, and <br />Bureau 01 Outdoor Recreation, De- <br />parlment 01 the Interior. Located <br />wlt"in Tuolumne Coumy, the entire <br />92-mlle study area IS within Federal <br />ownership, from the headwaters <br />above Tuolumne Meadows in Yo- <br />semite National Park, through Stan- <br />islaus National Forest. and ulti. <br />mately through a short Bureau of <br />Land Managemem stretch to Ihe <br />study terminus at New Don Pedro <br />Reservoir, <br />River access IS generally very <br />limited, due to the e){lremely rugged <br />topography 01 the area. Much of Ihe <br />study area Within Yosemile National <br />Park has been proposed by the <br />National Park Service for Wilder- <br />ness designatiol'1. The Tuolumne <br />nas been termed the flnesl white- <br />water rafting stream in California, <br />because 01 the Quality of t"e unin- <br />terrupted 18-mile run II oHers.
