<br />Elkhorn River Basin - There is a plentiful supply of ground water <br />for domestic purposes except in the northeast corner where aquifers are <br />thin and water yields low. The quality is "usable" for domestic purposes <br />although samples from wel Is in 32 communities contained excess chemical <br />substances. Thirty-one samples had excess iron and man~anese combined, <br />two samples had excess total dissolved solids, and one sample each with <br />excess sulfates and sodium. ~1ost water tested showed hardness in excess <br />of 150 mg/ I . <br /> <br />Lower Platte River Basin - Ground water Is limited in the glacial <br />drift area and adequate to plentiful in the Platte Valley. Omaha qets <br />part of its water supply and Lincoln almost al I of its water supply <br />from wel I fields alonq the Platte River. The quality is generally <br />"usable" for domestic uses throughout the Clasin, but over one-third <br />of the samples tested contained excess Iron and manganese combined-- <br />some severe. Hardness is qeneral Iy in excess of 150 mg/I. <br /> <br />Republican River Basin - Ground water is general Iy ade~uate except <br />in the lower portion of the Basin. Along the southern boundary, it <br />is often difficult to find an aquifer with adequate yield. The quality <br />is generally "usable" for domestic purposes. Excessive iron and <br />manganese combined was found in samples from wel Is in 12 communities <br />and excessive sodium in four communities. Hardness is generally in <br />excess of 150 mg/I. <br /> <br />Little Cllue River Basin - Adequate ground water supplies are avai 1- <br />able except on the south side of the river. There, several communities <br />secure their supplies outside the immediate area. The quality is "usable" <br />for domestic purposes with seven communities having wel I samples showing <br />excessive iron and manganese combined. <br /> <br />Big blue River Basin - Ground water is in good supplv except in <br />the glacial drift area in the eastern and southern part of the Basin. <br />Here, municipalities usually go outside their Immediate area to get <br />supplies to meet their needs. Most ground water meets "usable" quality <br />criteria for domestic purposes. Samples of water from wel Is in 27 <br />communities showed excessive concentrations of chemicals; 25 with <br />excessive iron and manQanese combined, five with excessive sodium, one <br />with excessive sulfate~, and two with excessive total dissolved solids. <br /> <br />Nemaha River 8asin - The supply of ground water is limited over <br />most of the Basin and severely limited in some areas. The quality is <br />mostly "usable," but less than "desirable" with excessive iron and <br />manganese combined found in wel I samples from 33 communities, excessive <br />sodium In five communities, and excessive total dissolved solids in <br />one community. Hardness generally exceeds 150 mg/I. <br /> <br />Projected Future Requirements <br /> <br />Quantity <br /> <br />The withdrawal of water by municipal systems is expected to triple <br />to 557,000 acre-feet during the next 50 years.
