Most consumers object to water <br />harder than this although their sensitivity is related to the hardness <br />to which they have become accustomed. <br /> <br />Ground Water Avai labi I ity and Qual ity by River BasJ.!12. <br /> <br />White River-Hat Creek Basin - Ground water is not avai lable in <br />quantities required to meet the municipal demands. Crawford obtains <br />its water from the White River. Chadron depended upon a surface water <br />supply from Chadron Creek unti I 1969, but has now developed a ground <br />water supply in the Niobrara River Basin. <br /> <br />The qual ity of ground waters over most of the Basin is "undesirable." <br />Surface water qual ity is generally "usable" for domestic purposes. <br /> <br />Niobrara River Basin - Ground water is plentiful except in Keya <br />Paha, Boyd, and Knox Counties. The quality of ground water is generally <br />"desirable" for domestic purposes, except in the lower portion of the <br />Uasin where samples from wells and springs in ten communities show <br />excess chomical substances, mostly iron and manganese combined. Outside <br />the Sandhi lis the hardness is generally in excess of 150 mg/I. <br /> <br />Missouri Tributaries River Basin - The quantity of ground water <br />is limited over most of the Basin. The scarcity is particularly notice- <br />able near the high population centers. The qual ity of the ground water <br />is generally "undesirable," with samples from 22 comC'unities showing <br />excessive iron and manganese combined. four showing excessive sulfates, <br />two showing excessive sodium, and one showing excessive nitrates. <br />Hardness is generally in excess of 150 mg/I. <br /> <br />North Platte River Basin - Ground water avai labi Iity is adequate <br />to plentiful. The quality is generally "usable," but excessive sodium <br />and/or iron and manganese combined were found in samples of wel I water <br />from nine communities. <br /> <br />South Platte River Basin - The quantity of ground water is adequate. <br />The qual ity is generally "usable," but samples of water from wells in <br />five communities showed excessive chemical concentrations including <br />four with excessive iron and manganese combined, one with excessive <br />sulfates, and one with excessive sodium. <br /> <br />Middle Platte River Basin - The quantity of ground water is plentiful. <br />The quality is generally "desirable," but samples from wells in seven <br />communities show undesirable characteristics; five with excessive iron <br />and manganese combined and two with excessive sodium. <br /> <br />Loup River Basin - Ground water is in plentiful supply. The quality <br />ranges 'from "usable" to "desirable" with well samples from 16 communities <br />showing excessive iron and manganese combined. <br /> <br />12 <br />
