Farm land on Harvey Mesa under the Harvey Gap Reservoir with

an average water right is valued in normal times at from 50 to 70

dollars per acre. The land above the Harvey Gap Reservoir is val ued

at from 20 to 40 dollars per acre. Dry land suitable of irrigation is

commonly valued at from 10 to 15 dollars per acre and grazing land at

about 2 dollars per acre,

The close proximity of extensive areas of summer grazing land for

sheep and cattle makes livestock r~ising an important feature of the

agriculture economy of the area. The livestock raised on sllch areas

is largely fed during the winter months with alfalfa hay and other forage
,

crops produced on irrigated farm land. Summer range lands are under the

supervision of the Division of Grazing and the 1fuite River National

Ii'orest.

The agricultural products of the area are largely mark~ted east

of the Continental Divide. The communi ties of Qlenwood Springs B.nd

Rifle and a number of mining camps in Western Colorado of small population

furnish a very limited market and may be considered the only points of

market in Western Colorado.

Ri.fle City Water SuPPly
The City of Rifle with a population of 1,486 (1940 census) is a

potential purchaser of project water. The water would be used in the

city water works system for culinary purposes. Prior to 1940 culinary

water for the city was supplied from Beaver Creek by gravity pipe line.

In 1940, faced with the problem of securing arldiMonal water, the city

.)
